His Beatitude Sviatoslav on the anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy: May the memory of the liquidators of the catastrophe be life-giving

Today we especially pray and remember the heroes who paid with their lives for the Chornobyl disaster. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the UGCC, emphasized this in his speech during the requiem concert "Chornobyl - Young People Will Remember" at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the tragedy.

The Primate noted that this year not only Ukraine but also the whole world will commemorate the 35th anniversary of perhaps the greatest man-made catastrophe of the twentieth century.

The word "Chornobyl," says His Beatitude Sviatoslav, "is not translated; in all languages it means death and environmental disaster, as well as a great wound on the body of the Ukrainian nation."

"Somehow it happened that this year this round date is observed almost together with Palm Sunday, the Feast of the Lord's entry into Jerusalem. This holiday became a triumph of life over death, of Christ’s truth over any human limitations," he said.

"It's very nice that the idea of the project “Chornobyl - Young People Will Remember” belongs to students. The tragedy is remembered by young people, who must build a world in which man will not cause disaster for himself, society, and the environment," he said.

"Today we especially want to remember those who covered Ukraine and the world with their own bodies - the liquidators of this great calamity," the Father and Head of the UGCC emphasized.

"Let this art project serve this purpose because music and poetry will sound in their honor. May this memory be life-giving,” the spiritual leader of Ukrainians wished in conclusion.
