Head of the UGCC to appeals to the world community: The war in Ukraine is not a computer game – it is the real pain of human beings

Today, I appeal to international institutions, to the collective values of our world community: Together we can and must stop the war in Ukraine. Don’t be deaf to the groans, screams, and cries of thousands of people in Ukraine!”

This was the appeal of the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav in his daily war address on the 24th day of the war of the Russian aggressor towards the peaceful people of Ukraine.

The Hierarch noted that today, and specifically during the last night, Ukraine has continued to defend itself.  Ukraine is enduring.  Ukraine believes more and more in its victory.  “We feel that God is with us.  And victory does not lie in the question of who has the greater human strength, but in which side is the Lord God on.  That is the side of truth and power,” stated His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

The Head of the UGCC appealed to all to bring attention today to the direct victims of this war, to the wounded.  “Ukraine doesn’t even know,” he says, “how many have been traumatized and wounded during this war.  Today we should especially remember our soldiers, who carry bodily wounds, giving up their lives and health for our freedom.”

The spiritual leader asks us to remember the peaceful civilians who have been affected by the bombing, the street battles, the shelling, and have become victims in this war.  “Let us remember the fathers and mothers, who covered their children with their own bodies, and were heavily wounded as a result.  One can say that today in Ukraine, the number of those wounded in varying degrees is in the thousands,” he stated.

The Head of the Church appeals especially to those who live outside of Ukraine, to the people of the world:  “Many of the people in the world who hear about the war in Ukraine today, grew up with computer games, and for them the word “war” can mean a game, or another type of show.  There is a great danger, that the people out there in the world, seeing the horrific footage of the war that is wounding, shredding, and crucifying Ukraine, -- are not concerned about the pain of the Ukrainian people.”

That is why His Beatitude Sviatoslav appeals to all:  “Don’t shut out the pain of Ukraine!  Because one day the Lord God will say to you:  I was wounded in Ukraine, and you turned your face away from Me.”
