Ukraine stands strong because it stands for the truth: UGCC Head on Day 35 of the war

Ukraine is defending the truth: Fighting for the truth, fighting for the dignity of human life, accepting that life is priceless and that it is unacceptable to simply destroy it, or use it as a political tool, or hold it hostage in the dealings of political criminals. This was stated by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, in his daily address on the 35th day of the Russian Federation’s devastating war against Ukraine.

He noted that the enemy is ruthlessly destroying our cities and villages, shooting civilians, oblivious to the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people. “Only now are we beginning to see the true consequences of this war. War always brings destruction. Whole cities and villages have turned into ghost towns. Where there was once a flourishing spiritual and intellectual public life, today there are only raging fires and desolate winds,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

The Head of the Church added that all war brings hunger and poverty to its victims. We must be ready to overcome all these consequences.

As of today, the UN reports that four million refugees have left Ukraine. About six million people have fled their towns and villages, half of them children. Ukraine has lost half of its economy.

“This means that the coming month will probably be one of the most difficult. But Ukraine is standing. Ukraine is defending itself. Ukraine is winning and surprising the world,” noted the spiritual leader.

The Head of the Church claims that Ukraine is standing because it is defending the truth, and this war reminds us more and more of the spiritual struggle that every Christian wages against the devil, his servants, and against evil.

“I want to remind you of a basic principle of spiritual struggle: evil always hides in the dark. If the devil and his evil deeds are brought to light, if they are debunked, the devil immediately loses his power. The light of God's truth weakens and disarms him. Therefore, when we hide or conceal our sins and transgressions, they become stronger, they dominate over us. However, when we bring them to light, go to confession, even openly talk about them and open our hearts to a priest, it is like bringing the devil to light, and taking away his power,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

Reflecting on this spiritual struggle, on the need to debunk and expose evil, the Head of the Church especially thanked the media and all the journalists who, at the cost of their lives, are exposing the truth about the pain and suffering of Ukraine.
