"We must share God's forgiveness of our sins with others by forgiving them," Head of the UGCC in the catechesis

In the Our Father prayer, when we ask forgiveness for our sins, we say, "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who trespass against us." Therefore, we must share God's forgiveness of our sins with our neighbors by forgiving them. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the UGCC, emphasized this in a video catechesis on the Lord’s Prayer, explaining the content of its fifth request.

In the 22nd Saturday video catechesis on prayer, the Head of the Church noted that reconciliation between God and man is one of the central ideas of the Gospel. "The meaning of the good news is that the Father sent His only begotten Son not to condemn the world, but to save it. By His death on the cross, by His Blood, the Son of God gave us forgiveness and redemption of our sins," he said.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav then remarked that the Our Father prayer makes a certain dependence on the forgiveness we can receive from God with the forgiveness we must give to those who have sinned against us.

“We must share God's forgiveness, the forgiveness of our sins, with our neighbors by forgiving them. The deeper we can forgive our neighbor, the deeper and fuller we can accept the gift of reconciliation with God and forgiveness of our personal sins,” said the Father and Head of the UGCC, adding that in this prayer we are asking God for such an ability.

“We pray to our Heavenly Father to teach us to forgive so that we may be forgiven, so that we do not deny our neighbor what we ask for in the prayer to our merciful, loving God. The forgiveness of our sins is the mystery of God's mercy and God's love. As we pray the Our Father prayer, we also pray for the grace of the Holy Sacraments of Confession and Repentance. After all, we can experience the gift of reconciliation with God when we can share that peace with our neighbors,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav at the end of the catechesis.
