In order to visualize the whole specter of social services carried out by the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, a series of videos on social services will be produced, according to information provided by the head of the Department of Social Affairs, UGCC Patriarchal Curia, Rev. Andriy Nahirnyak.

The series will first depict the social services for the incarcerated, children, especially orphans, those who are in crisis situations and the physically or mentally challenged.   As a finale, one general film will cover all the social services of UGCC in order to show how various church structures are involved in these efforts.  “Nothing is as convincing as something seen.  When people see the specific children who are assisted by the Church, when they see how our priests and volunteers assist those in prison, how religious and laity work and assist physically and mentally challenged individuals…” noted the Department Head.

Videos on such topics will be presented throughout the year to community organizations, parishes and eparchies.  Such videos will be distributed at meetings of UGCC Head with various individuals.  “Our goal is to inform the public about the services which our Church does.  In fact, our Church is involved in a great many projects, but it is not generally known.  Unfortunately, information about any lapses or misunderstandings are much more widespread than facts of good and dedicated service,” states Rev. Andriy.  He is convinced that there is a need to popularize information about such Church activities, particularly to attract other people to join existing services or to create new ones.

We remind all readers that this year, just as the previous two years, UGCC Synod dedicated to preparation for the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine.  The first year was dedicated to God’s Word, the second to Holy Sacraments, and this year to social services (deaconship).  Also this year has been declared in the entire Catholic Church as the Year of  Faith.  Therefore, the UGCC Synod of Bishops decided to take on certain projects in order to mark this active manner of expressing our faith.  In fact, Meatless Sunday, a week prior to the beginning of Great Lent, was named a Day of Social Services in UGCC
