UGCC canonists unite into a society

In autumn the Society of Ukrainian Canonists [specialists in canon law] was created at the UGCC. The confirmation of the statutes of the society and the granting of its status as a legal person took place on the basis of the decree of His Beatitude Lubomyr of November 29, 2008. Fr. Roman Dutchak, J.C.L., a member of the board of the society, informed the Information Department. The Society of Ukrainian Canonists of the UGCC (SUC) was founded at the initiative of His Beatitude Lubomyr on October 23, 2008. On that day the statutes of the society were accepted at a general meeting, which outlined precisely its activities and main purpose: research and study of canon law by conducting meetings and lectures, scholarly work, conferences and councils, cooperation with similar societies of other countries, and various publications. Also at the meeting, by the vote of those present, Doctor of Canon Law Protopresbyter Roman Shafran was elected the head of the society. Today there are approximately 20 members of the society, who come from various eparchies of the UGCC. The Society of Ukrainian Canonists has many plans for activity, and the most important is to help improve the system of legal proceedings in the UGCC. "One of the tasks of this society is to care for and to interest students who are deeply involved in the study of canon law. In this way they will consequently be able to more effectively introduce them into the judicial structure of our Church." So His Beatitude Lubomyr spoke about one of the tasks of the SUC.
