The UGCC fights effectively with the alcohol dependence within the society

Monday, 10 September 2012, 09:56
An epidemic of alcohol dependence breaks out with the time in almost each of the Ukrainian families. Ukraine ranks first on the global scale in the number of cases of alcoholism among young people; every fourth of those dependent is female. The state, as well as, a range of public organizations are making attempts in order to fight it, however, the results often appear to be temporary and the methods – to be ineffective.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was effectively assisting the victims of alcohol in the past centuries as well, however, after emerging from the underground it started actively resuming this social service to help the neighbor. Since 2006, the UGCC created the special subcommittee “For a Sober Life”, which was headed by Fr. Dr. Andriy Lohin, who in 2012 was appointed as the Chairman of the UGCC Commission on Pastoral Health Care.

In his first encyclical "God is love» (Deus caritas est), Pope Benedict XVI emphasized that: "... the central task of the Church is an active and well-organized love of neighbor" (see paragraph 21). On such issues as: how the Church performs this crucial task, what it thinks of the problem of alcohol dependence, how is the work of the Church in this specific area organized, where the assistance may be found, what else does the Pastoral Health Care plan to do in order to heal the Ukrainian society; the report on those issues as well as on a number of others for the “Catholic Observer” was delivered by Fr. Andriy Lohin, who has a vast experience in fighting for the Virtue of Sobriety, as well as,  is a tireless worker for the love of neighbor.

Let us recall that the UGCC Commission on Pastoral Health Care addressed the faithful people, so as to call them for a common prayer for the victims of alcohol dependence in Ukraine. On this occasion, on the 10th of September, at 14.00, the press-conference will be held in the conference hall of Lviv archdiocese.
