On January 5, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in Ukraine mark the 22nd anniversary of the congregation’s founding.

On January 5, 1999, the first sisters arrived in Ukraine: Abbess Maria de las Lagrimas Farina, Sr. Maria Madre de Dios Sokoliuk, and Sr. Maria Christiana Demianchuk. The last two sisters were natives of Argentina but had Ukrainian roots. The first Ukrainian monastery was built in Ivano-Frankivsk. Especially for the Ukrainian branch of the Congregation, the color of the habit was changed to black, because the Byzantine tradition is not characterized by monastic clothing of another color.

The female Ukrainian branch of the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word - the Congregation of the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara - also serve in Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Russia, and Italy.
