New superior general of the Order of Redemptorists

On November 4, 2009, the XXIV General Chapter in Rome from elected Fr. Mikhail Brehl (Michael Brehl) from the Province of Edmonton-Toronto (Canada) as the new superior general of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. During the next 6 years he will head the community which includes 5.5 thousand members in 78 countries worldwide. Father Mikhail Brehl was born in Toronto in 1955. He entered to the Order of Redemptorists in 1975, his eternal vows were proclaimed in 1979, and in 1980 in Toronto he was ordained a priest. He finished the Toronto School of Theology, with a master's degree in theology. Before serving as superior general he executed different services in the province: he was the magister of novitiate, prefect of students, and member of Provincial Council, provincial vicar, and also the provincial. Many years he worked as a pastor, and later as a missionary, conducting the parochial missions. He belonged to the Theological Commission of the Canadian Conference of Monasticism. He was a member of the administration of pastoral commission in Ontario. Fr. Brehl received experience in cooperating with colleagues at the international level, executing the ministry in the General Secretariat of the structure. He was one of the moderators during XXIII General Chapter (2003) and the present Chapter. He is acknowledged as the spiritual retreat lecturer and was invited by different groups of Redemptorists all over the world to conferences and events on topics related to the spirituality of the Order. He speaks English and French, understands Spanish and Italian. When Fr. Brehl was elected the superior general he was a delegate of the General Chapter as the Provincial Superior of the Edmonton-Toronto Province. Fr. Brehl replaces Fr. Joseph Tobin, who administrated the order for the last 12 years.
