Monastics of UGCC begin courses at the School of Spirituality

"Why is it necessary for doctors to constantly improving their skills? Consecrated persons also need to sharpen their spiritual knowledge because they also reach moments of stagnation. Even Pope John Paul II in one of his encyclicals spoke about the need for permanent formation (education), for no one can say that he knows everything. One should constantly strive to learn God’s depth by reading, listening, and praying because the bottom can never be reached," said the first teacher of the newly established School of Spirituality for Consecrated Persons, Studite hieromonk Jona Maxim. He shared his knowledge, especially of the Old Testament, with the 38 participants of the conference "Biblical Spirituality: Old Testament Images of the Spiritual Struggle." The School of Spirituality for Consecrated Persons, which opened on February 4, 2011, in Bryukhovychi, near Lviv, was initiated by the UGCC Commission on Matters of Monasticism, led by Fr. Peter Baran (CSSR). The commission was inspired by the school for laity that has functioned for two years at the Holy Dormition Monastery in the Univ Lavra. The idea to create a school for monastics was first expressed several years. Its goal is to help people who are unable to attend institutions but want to learn the basics of theology. The two-year course will be open to all interested consecrated persons. The students will be able to choose their classes. The program will also include time for joint and personal prayer and spiritual conversation.
