"The method ‘Spiritual Therapy’ that was developed and used by the subcommittee For a Sober Life helps people addicted to alcohol restore theirrelationship with God and helps them recover from alcoholism. It also helps those families of people who suffer from addiction,” Fr. Andrii Lohin said on October 29 while presenting the achievements of the subcommittee. The fifth anniversary was celebrated at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. Bishop Benedykt (Aleksiychuk), Auxiliary Bishop of Lviv Archeparchy, Fr.Petro Rak, head of the Patriarchal Curia commissions, Greek Catholic priests and psychologists participated in the celebration. “Spiritual seminaries in Lviv, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk are part of the educational program, which has developed its pastoral care for alcoholics and their families. The main emphasis is put on promoting the virtue of sobriety,” said Fr. Lohin. The subcommittee For a Sober Life also carries out its activities through a network of advisory and educational centers in Ternopil, Lviv, Stryi and the Lviv region. Preventive and rehabilitation actions are taken in these centers to overcome alcohol dependence.
There are about a thousand priests, monks and seminarians in the UGCC who are active participants in seminars that are held by the subcommittee For a Sober Life in various eparchies of the UGCC. The commission is proud to have many priests who provide pastoral care to alcoholics.
