The Licentiate of Liturgical Sciences of the Philosophical and Theological Department of UCU allows those with basic and general education in the Eastern Catholic theology (STB or equivalent) to further study the liturgical inheritance of the Byzantium tradition, especially, the thousand-year old tradition of the Kyivan Church. The program hopes to help students –theologians and those already involved in pastoral and catechetical ministry – revive liturgical life so it may become a source of spiritual force and inspiration.
The students of the licentiate’s program can be theologians who intend to work in liturgical commissions and programs on different levels, pastors or those who expect to be ordained, and also monastic and lay theologians and catechists. In the agreement with the board of the faculty, the academic requirements of single subject or licentiate work can have either a more academic or more pastoral emphasis. The consists of 4 semesters, 15 subjects, 3 seminars, and the writing of two academic articles and a licentiate work (90-120 pages). Semesters 1-3 will have lessons two days a week (Wednesday and Thursday); semester 4 – one day. As part of the admission process, interested students must prove a working knowledge of two modern languages (in addition to Ukrainian), and also patristic Greek and Church Slavonic language. Or, these requirements can be fulfilled by the beginning of the second semester upon completing the appropriate courses. At the beginning of the second semester a student gives for approval the topic of his or her licentiate work. The licentiate work must be completed before the end of fourth semester. Students in the master's degree program who take part in “liturgical specialization,” will receive credits for seven subjects and one seminar, which will go toward the requirements of the licentiate’s program. A part of the licentiate program is participating in all prayer services which will be held in the chapel in the campus of the Philosophy and Theology Faculty of UCU on lesson days: priests and deacon in ministering, laity in singing, and maids in the divine services. The program foresees periodic divine services in Greek and Church Slavonic languages (at least once a month).  More information at this address: www.ucu.edu.ua/ukr/academics/theological/licenciate_liturgical
