From the Head of the UGCC: We thank the Lord for the heroic service of our physicians to their people

“I am appealing to the World Health Organization, to various international institutions, and to organizations such as Doctors Without Borders: speak out in defense of life in Ukraine!”

This appeal was made by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in his daily address on the 23rd day of Russia's bloody war against Ukraine.

“Thank you for the support you are providing our doctors today, but you must speak out to the whole world:   the killing of children in Ukraine must stop immediately!” His Beatitude Sviatoslav insisted.

The Primate noted that during the last night, bombs and rockets again rained down on civilians.  It happened in Sumy, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in Mykolayiv, and in western Ukraine, particularly in Lviv. "But Ukraine cannot be intimidated. Ukraine is defending itself.  Ukraine is fighting for its right to freedom and independence. Ukraine is enduring,” the Head of the Church remarked.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav noted that the entire UGC Church continues to pray daily, first of all, for our army, which has halted the advance of a large number of enemy troops who are no longer able to penetrate the interior of our country, and have turned to so-called total war.

Today the clergy and the faithful pray especially for our medical workers: doctors, nurses, paramedics - all those who are the first to encounter the inexpressible human pain in Ukraine, and who have almost become the main targets of various attacks and enemy strikes on civilians.

According to official data from the Ministry of Health, 117 hospitals and medical facilities in Ukraine have been directly attacked in the past few weeks, seven of which have been completely damaged beyond repair. Forty-three ambulances were attacked, many doctors and medical workers died.

“Today we thank the Lord for the heroic service of our physicians to our people… Our doctors continue saving people’s lives in Ukraine,” he remarked.

The Head of the UGCC also commended the work of doctors who are assisting during childbirth deliveries in cold hospitals without electricity in Chernihiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv and other besieged cities of Ukraine.
