“The catechist plays an important role in the process of catechization. Because the content of activities has to be interesting and change together with the child who grows, forms, develops,” said the newly appointed head of the Metropolitan Catechetical Commission of the UGCC Fr. Mikhail Harvat.
“The catechist plays an important role in the process of catechization. Because the content of activities has to be interesting and change together with the child who grows, forms, develops,” said the newly appointed head of the Metropolitan Catechetical Commission of the UGCC Fr. Mikhail Harvat. “The lessons should be complemented with creative activities, pilgrimages, excursions, in the evenings, in groups, so that the children, in addition to their activities where they directly learn the principles of Christian dogma, have more possibilities to perfect their own spiritual world.” According to Fr. Mikhail Harvat, catechists are people of deep self-sacrifice who cherish the Lord and have a great desire to serve, to work in catechetical ministry. More information about the activity of the Metropolitan Catechetical Commission, as well as the training of catechists and the development of catechetical schools in Ukraine, can be found in an interview with Fr. Mikhail Harvat, which soon will appear on the official UGCC website.

Background information:  According to the Decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC from 1998, the last Sunday of September the UGCC celebrates the Day of Catechists. The term “catechization” originates from a Greek word “katekhizo,” which means to instruct. This is what the Christian world calls the process of studying the principles of Christian dogma.
