On September 24, 2010, in Barcelona the first seminarian of the UGCC in Spain was ordained as a deacon. The new deacon, Roman Shymon, who during the last two years completed his studies at the Seminary of Barcelona, will minister Ukrainian immigrants the region. On that day Bishop Dionisiy led the Hierarchal Divine. During the sermon, Bishop Dionisiy passed a greeting from the head of the UGCC Patriarch Lubomyr to the Archbishop of Barcelona, Cardinal Lluís Sistach, and rector of the seminary Fr. Josep M. Turull Garriga. Next the bishop thanked the Spanish church in particular: “Foremost I express gratitude to the Church of Barcelona, which opened the doors of its churches for the faithful from Ukraine and accepted our seminarians. A deacon is someone who serves. Serving (diakonia) each other creates a mutual community (koinonia) of love, and the mutual community is the testimony (martiria) of a new way of life, even to the greatest certification – to dedicate one’s life to the love of God and neighbor. This concerns all Christians, and in particular, those who enter the priest’s order, and diakonia is the first degree. Our Deacon Roman today begins his service. During the ceremony we will pray for his good ministry!”
