Fifth Social Days of UGCC to be held in Ukraine in November

The Fifth Social Days of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will be held from November 1 to December 14 in various cities of Ukraine. They will begin onNovember 1 with a prayer in memory of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky in all churches of the UGCC. This year the Social Days of the UGCC will pay special attention to human dignity: a human has value in himself and, therefore, is entitled to dignity andrespect. A conference on this topic, “Human Dignity in the Teachings of John Paul II” will take place on November 4-5, 2011, in the cultural arts center of the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. During the conference, an exhibition “Human Dignity – As We See It” will open and social organizations will be presented. Patriarch Sviatoslav, theologians, scholars, clergy, and students will take part in the event. Events will also be held in Zhytomyr (November 1), Luhansk (November 8-9), Kharkiv (November 12-13), Odesa (November 22-23), Donetsk (November 26-27), Kirovograd (December 2-3), and Stryi (December 13-14). In Zhytomyr the participants of the Social Days will have the opportunity to meet with His Beatitude Lubomyr (Husar). In addition, “Solidarity Actions” will take place in various cities of Ukraine in November. Representatives of different religions, social organizations and all interested in social work can visit orphanages, nursing homes, prisons, and people with disabilities. The UGCC Social Days are intended to draw attention to social problems, the needs of the disabled, orphans and prisoners, to support those who daily resolve social issues and learn from their experiences. The UGCC Justice and Peace Commission and the UGCC Commission for Promoting Christian Unity are the organizers of the Social Days.
