“To remember appropriately the victims of the tragic events of the Ukrainian-Polish confrontation in Volyn in 1943 and in order to preclude in the future a similar barbarity that is contradictory to being a Christian, on Sunday, July 14, 2013, within the framework of the All-Ukrainian Pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia and in all the UGCC churches of Kyiov-Halych Major Archbishopric, a Requiem Liturgy for the repose of the souls of all Poles and Ukrainians, who became innocent victims of this tragedy,” states a Resolution of the Sixtieth Session of the Synod of Bishops of UGCC Kyiv-Halych Major Archbishopric, held on May 15-16, 2013 in Zarvanytsia.

We remind readers that already earlier, on the eve of Great Lent, the Synod of zzugcc zzbishops of the  Kyiv-Halych Major Archbishopric  had appealed to the faithful and all people of good will on the occasiobn of  the 70th anniversary of the Volyn tragedy and expressed its concern that “politically caused manipulation of this tragedy and the obstinate non-reconciliation of human hearts of individuals or groups can only ignite the turned down flickers of international aminosity.

Also UGCC Head His Beatitude Sviatoslav in his comments to the Department of Information regarding the 70th anniversary of the Volyn tragedy especially highlighted: “We claim that we want to rebuild relations between the Ukrainian and the Polish peoples in the spirit of mutual reconciliation and forgiveness, so that our past does not poison our future.  After all we are two fraternal peoples, sons of one Catholic Church.  And we should jointly acknowledge our sins.  We need to together apologize to each other, embrace and build a joint European future”.
