Head of the government met with the Archbishop of Lviv of the UGCC

On October 2, 2009, the Ukrainian Prime Minister Julia Tymoshenko met with Archbishop Ihor (Voznyak) of Lviv of the UGCC. The meeting took place as part of a working trip of the head of the government to the Lviv region. “I want to thank you for your unique service to the people,” said Julia Tymoshenko as she visited the St. George’s Cathedral and the crypt where rest the relics of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyj, Patriarch Joseph Slipyj, and other hierarchies of the UGCC. The head of the government expressed her conviction that only with a strong spirit of faith and love did the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church obtain its freedom and an independent Ukraine. In the Metropolitan chambers of the cathedral, a working meal took place during which the prime minister, clergy, and government officials spoke about morals in the state and the concept of honesty, justice, and order. “I have positive impressions after meeting with the head of government, in fact, we sincerely and openly discussed publicly the moral status of the state, education, restitution of the church property, and covered a serious of other important questions,” described Bishop Ihor.  At the end of the visit, the archbishop of Lviv granted Mrs. Tymoshenko a copy of the icon of the Mother of God of Terebovlia, as a religious souvenir from her visit to St. George’s Cathedral.
